With the cost of college tuition rising astronomically each year, everyone wants to compete for the chance to obtain as much funding as possible. There are many scholarship opportunities available, but the competition for the vast majority of these is fierce. As such, you want to ensure that each scholarship application you send out represents you to the best of your ability. You’re competing with countless students who want this award just as much as you do!

Because of that, the following guide aims to show you 7 mistakes you should avoid making at all costs when it comes to applying for scholarships. Avoiding these mistakes just might mean the difference between an “ok” application and one that shows you are truly deserving of a college scholarship.

1. The Numbers Game. Many students make the dreadful assumption that they should only apply for one or two scholarships at a time, then cross their fingers and hope they win. Hold the phone! If you’re only applying for very few scholarships, you’ve already drastically decreased your chances of actually obtaining funding. The more scholarships you apply for, the better your chances of winning one or two. Keep this in mind when you’re browsing the Internet looking for legitimate scholarship opportunities. If you’re eligible, apply!

2. Follow Directions. This may seem like common sense, but you might be surprised at how many people fail to read directions completely when applying for scholarships. One of the worst things you can do as a prospective student looking for scholarships is to apply willy-nilly for opportunities you are not eligible for. Additionally, sending in incomplete applications will usually result in automatic disqualification for the award as well. You have eyes – use them, and read the directions completely for each scholarship you’re applying for. You want to apply for as many scholarships as possible, but applying for opportunities you’re not eligible for will only waste time and prevent you from applying elsewhere.

3. Fill Out the Form. A common mistake for many students applying for scholarships is neglecting to fill out the entire application. Incomplete applications – even if it’s only a detail or two – will reflect badly upon your ability to follow directions, mistake number two to avoid. Even if a particular question doesn’t apply to you, it’s best to note that directly on the application. Rather than leaving a space blank, simply write, “Does not apply” so the form is accurately and completely filled out.

4. Write Neatly. If you are applying for scholarships via snail-mail, make sure you are completing your application legibly. A sloppy application will nearly guarantee failure to obtain scholarship funding. The person reading your application most likely looks at hundreds of applications per day, and a sloppily written form will not hold his attention for very long. Chances are, if the scholarship reviewer has to guess at what you’re trying to say, you’re not getting the scholarship. Bottom line: write neatly! It’s always best to send applications electronically, if possible, or type the information in – but if you can’t, make sure you’re using your best penmanship.

5. Spell Correctly. Essentially, you are being “graded” on the appearance of your scholarship application. Your application is supposed to be a reflection of you, and poor spelling and/or grammar will definitely reflect badly. An application can be neat and presentable, but if it’s filled with juvenile spelling mistakes and grammatically incorrect sentences, you’re not going to get the scholarship. To ensure your application doesn’t automatically get rejected on the basis of spelling, have someone with decent writing skills look over your applications beforehand. They’ll be able to point out any mistakes you might have made and show you how to correct them if you’re unsure. It’s better to ask for help then to send it a poor application, so suck up your pride and ask for help if you need it.

6. Meet Deadlines. Possibly one of the worst mistakes you can make when applying for scholarships is failing to get the application in by the deadline. Scholarship committees set deadlines for a reason, and failing to get the application in on time indicates a lack of organizational skills. You’ve put a lot of hard work and effort into filling out your applications – don’t let your hard work be for nothing by failing to get the application in by the deadline. A handy way to avoid this mistake is to mark on a large wall calendar all the deadlines for each specific scholarship you’re applying for. That way, you can be ahead of the game by knowing in advance when you need to have the applications sent. Taking a few extra moments to plan your schedule this way will surely maximize your chances of obtaining funding for college.

7. Avoid Scams. Finally, don’t fall for any scholarship “opportunity” that claims they need money up front or your credit card information before you can be eligible for a scholarship. Scholarships should never cost money to apply, and anyone who asks you to pay up front is probably operating a scam to take your hard earned money. There are plenty of resources available online and within your community you can take advantage of without having to pay anyone to apply for a scholarship.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true – it probably is!

The above mistakes are typically some of the most common errors students make when applying for scholarships. By following the guidelines set forth above, you can avoid making these mistakes altogether while simultaneously maximizing your chances of getting a scholarship or two.

Applying for scholarships is a daunting task already, so don’t make it harder on yourself and waste time by making mistakes that are easily avoidable. By being aware of these common problems, hopefully you can avoid making them altogether. Essentially, all you need to do is double check your work and read directions and you’ve already maximized your chances for scholarship success.

In fulfilling most college assignments, it is important to know who your audiences are- yourself, your teacher and your classmates. Knowing your audience will give you a push for your writing. Your audience is scholastic and as such, your work must reflect that. In tackling indirect topics, you will write more effectively if you consider your audience. If you know your readers very well, it may be important to ask; what do my readers know about this subject? What do they need to be told? What do they probably believe? Where are my statements likely to offend them? What objections are they likely to bring up in relation to what I have said about them? How can I keep from alienating them? Among your readers and especially your classmates, you will find the uninformed reader, the reluctant reader and the resistant reader and take note that your teacher will assume the roles of these three readers.

After you have ascertained your readers, you should know for what reasons you are composing that paper. Any college script has a clear-cut purpose. Answer this question; what do I want to do? This is the question that will purge out all irrelevant materials from your work or anything that hinders your paper from getting where you want it to go. Besides aiming for marks, your aim is also to write better, deeper, clearer and more satisfying than you have ever written before

Keeping your audience and purpose in mind means choosing a strong opening that will address all the questions raised. When confronted with selecting a topic, consider the following question: Is your topic sentences accurate and straight to the point? The topic sentence is a foundation to your essay. Take note that good topic sentences hook readers and give them a way to interpret the rest of the paragraph. An interesting topic sentence must be interesting, accurate and limited. A topic sentence should be accurate because it serves as a guide to the rest of the paragraphs. A topic sentence should be limited because you do not want to mislead the reader about what you intend to cover in the paragraphs.

Once you have gotten a topic sentence, begin your work maybe with a story or a quotation. Introduce your subject and expand on it. After stating your point, supply some interesting statistics to back up your contention and offer a partial explanation of the phenomenon you focus on. You can also begin your essay with a question and the reader will expect the rest of the essay to complete the answer. To challenge the readers, you can equally begin with a controversial opinion.

Essays for college have important things to tell in the concluding paragraphs. This part of your work impacts lasting footprints in your readers’ mind. Begin with a sentence that points back to the previous paragraph and at the same time looks ahead. Do not leave the reader suspended; thinking you should have gone ahead. Never introduce a new idea in your conclusion and avoid signaling the reader that your end to the script is near with words like; “in conclusion”

The college admissions essay can be quite a daunting and intimidating task for many aspiring college students. However, the college admissions essay does not have to be so bad. In all actuality though, it seems many colleges do favor an application essay which knocks them off their feet, but in that case, a book on writing essays may help with that task along with a LOT of practice. On the other hand, many colleges and universities just want to know more about YOU…while seeing how well you write.

Colleges and universities WANT you to succeed. They want you to do well on the college admissions essay so they can accept you and make them look great! In order to help you along with this task, I have put together some tips to help all students along with their university admissions essays.

First thing I wanted to point out is that focusing and staying on a topic that you know about very well is key. This will show, through your writing, that you are very sincere and do not appear to be misleading anyone. Write what you now about.

Put a little bit of humor in your writing. Of course, the college application essay is not a stand up comedy routing, but a little humor helps show a more modest side to your self. Remember to stay on topic while modestly making light humor out of some of the subject matter in your college admissions essay topic.

In reference to the last tip, remember that you don’t need to impress the reader with something you don’t really have. Try to avoid using really big words that you normally would never ever use in real life. This will only come across as inflated and a little odd to them. But don’t worry, they read enough of this type of thins in many college admissions essays all the time from others. Be original.

Even though there may be an option to hand write your college application essay, try to type your essay out completely. If you cannot gain access to a computer or simply must write your essay out, then be sure to write as legibly as you can. A messy-looking essay may not show your writing in its best light and may even potentially hurt the reader’s impression of your writing skills overall. So it is just safer to type the essay when applying for college.

Start out with a rough draft of your essay and make improvements as you go along rather than simply writing from the heart and letting destiny do the rest. This will give you an opportunity to look over your grammar and be sure that it is clear, concise and legible (if writing by hand). You are trying to make the best impression possible for this admissions essay so make this shot count.

After you have written the essay and have made corrections on it, have family and friends look at it with a critical eye. Ask friends or family members who have already written a college application essay to take a look at it to see if it does any justice based on their past essay experience.

As I mentioned earlier, different colleges have different requirements for their admissions essays and it would be very wise to read over all of the guidelines the college or university sets forth in regards to your college admissions essay. It is very important to follow directions, especially when you want them to educate you. So be sure that the essay is no longer or shorter than what they require.

These tips and referring to other essay-writing resources can help you, as a student, to really achieve your college goals and getting into that college you really wanted to attend. In many cases, seemingly smaller things such as the college essay for admissions makes such a big difference as it is the only real statement you are able to make in reference to the consideration of your admission to the college. So give it your best shot and show those essay readers the best side of you.
